Grade Level Expectation: Product Performance

2. Develop and apply instrumental music skills to perform and communicate through the arts.

      E. Group playing: Perform with other instrumentalists to achieve a refined ensemble sound including dynamics, timbre, balance, blend, and intonation.

Learning Targets:

  1. Students will accurately identify and perform dynamics.

  2. Students will play with good tone quality.

  3. Students will use listening skills to balance and blend their part with the other parts in the ensemble.

  4. Students will play with excellent intonation.

Grade Level Expectation: Elements of Music

1. Develop and apply the knowledge and skills to read and notate music

      C. Symbols of expression: Identify and apply symbols for dynamics, tempo and articulation

Learning Targets:

  1. Students will accurately define the following music terms.

    1. p for piano, f for forte, mp for mezzo piano, mf for mezzo forte, pp for pianissimo, ff for fortissimo, cresc or < for crescendo, decresc or> for decrescendo, dim for diminuendo, accelerando, ritardando, allegro, moderato, andante, largo, a tempo, accent, fermata, ties, slurs, staccato, legato, marcato, and sfz

  2. Students will accurately perform the listed music terms

Grade Level Expectation: Elements of Music

1. Develop and apply the knowledge and skills to read and notate music

      E. Sight Reading: Sight read standard musical notation at level 4 difficulty (Level 4 - moderately difficult; requires well-developed technical skills, attention to phrasing interpretation, and ability to perform various meters and rhythms in a variety of keys.

Learning Targets:

  1. Students will perform Level 4 notes and rhythms accurately.

  2. Students will perform with correct phrasing and interpretation.

  3. Students will perform accurately in various meters.

    1. 4/4, 2/4, ¾, 6/8, 9/8, 12/8, and 2/2

  4. Students will accurately perform scales and arpeggios, 2 octaves where appropriate, in the level 4 major keys.

Grade Level Expectation: Artistic Perceptions

2. Develop and apply the knowledge and skills to evaluate music and musical performance

      B. Critique musical performance and compositions: Demonstrate the ability to distinguish between quality and non-quality performance through listening, performing, and self-assessment using music terminology.

Learning Targets:

  1. Students will accurately evaluate the musical performances of others, both individuals and ensembles, using music terminology.

  2. Students will accurately evaluate their own musical performances, both individually and as part of an ensemble, using music terminology.
